Lawyers’ Environmental Action Team (LEAT) is a private, non-governmental and non-profit making organization. LEAT was initially registered in March 1994 under the Societies Ordinance Cap. 337, as a Society. In 1995, it was re-registered as a non partisan, non-governmental organization which is not-for-profit making organization. In November 2001, LEAT was transformed into a Company limited by guarantee without share capital under the Companies Ordinance,Cap. 212 of the Laws of Tanzania with Reg. No 42565. Though it was transformed into a Company LEAT is operating as a Non- Governmental Organization. It was granted a Certificate of Compliance, No. 1985 in April 2008.

The idea to form LEAT was engineered by 15 Lawyers who felt that law is an indispensable tool in fostering sound natural resources management and environmental protection.
